CONTE CRAYON DRAWINGS

MATTHEW DAUB

Conte Crayon is a traditional French drawing medium. Unlike charcoal, Conte is slightly resinous, which makes complete erasure difficult, however it also allows for the build-up of rich dark values.

"I believe in drawing for drawing’s sake. My drawings do not serve as studies for paintings; they are stand-alone works. I believe there is an evocative quality inherent in the absence of color and concentration of value."

THE KEMPTON DRAWINGS

From 2009 through 2011, I produced a series of drawings and watercolors of the town of Kempton, Pennsylvania. A catalog was produced for the exhibition at ACA Galleries containing essays by Joyce Carol Oates and Carl Little.

"(Daub's) work is subtle, understated, 'poetic' – he’s a visionary of the near-at-hand and seemingly domestic – the world of smalltown America, rural landscapes and forlorn industrial buildings upon which light and the absence of light confer an austere dignity.... Matthew Daub makes of the regional something universal and archetypal; his flawlessly executed watercolors and paintings are not representations of scenes we have all seen, but transformations of the familiar into something rich and strange"   Joyce Carol Oates
